Stopping Unwanted Telemarketers Cold.
Do you remember what it was like before the National Do Not Call Registry was created? Almost every night without fail, you'd receive a barrage of phone calls trying to sell you aluminum siding, refinance your home loan, or send you a sample of their latest product.
And they always called just as you sat down for dinner or your favorite tv show. Of course they knew what they were doing. The evening hours from 5:00 to 9:00 were the prime time to catch someone at home. But as mush as it worked for them, it was a major pain in the ass to the rest of us.
For the most part, that changed when the National Do Not Call Registry was created. Anyone can add their phone number to the "do not call" list to prevent unwanted calls from telemarketers.
Thanks to the implementation of the national "do not call" list, we no longer have to endure a barrage of phone calls from telemarketers while we try to eat dinner or relax after a hard day of work.
At least we shouldn't have to. Unfortunately there are a few unscrupulous companies out there who blatantly ignore the "do not call" list and continue to call again and again.
What can you do to stop them? You can file a complaint at DoNotCall.gov and the offending party will be subject to large fines.
You'll need to know the name and phone number of the company calling you in order to file a valid complaint. The phone number is easy enough if you have caller ID. But the name can be a bit tougher to track down. Many companies outsource their telemarketing so the name given to you by a sales rep may not actually be accurate.
What you should do is run a reverse telephone lookup to determine exactly who is calling you so you can report them. Violators can be fined up to $11,000 for each violation, and each phone call may be considered a separate violation.
Once a company is hit with tens of thousands of dollars in fines, you can be sure they won't be bothering you again!
